[ he knows what's coming even before her chest lights up. it's his own fault, probably, and they're literally at the ocean, so when the water comes barreling towards him, cassian doesn't do anything to fight it. he just laughs before it hits him, though he does stumble from the unexpected force of it. he regains his balance quickly enough with her help, wiping the water from his face. ]
I am not sure it is quite so safe for me to come in too anymore.
[ he hasn't even stepped in the water and he's already soaked! besides, he has a nice view from here, sparing a moment to 100% check out his girlfriend's guns in the gleam of the sun and water. ]
[ the wall of water slips back into the ocean once she notes cassian is steady. she knows he can swim but that is different than having a wave dumped on top of him. ]
You're already wet, [ she reasons, even as she does finally shimmy out of her wet shorts, flinging them onto the sand with her sweater and leaving her in just her relatively plain swimsuit that daisy had picked out for her. she glances back to linger on the way his shirt clings to his muscles, nothing is making her regret her decision to soak him. his laugh, his irritatingly perfect abs, the smile still persisting on his expression...
she puffs out a breath, water rippling out around her as she tries to get a grip on how much she loves her stupid boyfriend.
she turns to teasing, ] Don't worry, I'll keep you safe.
[ he knows it's only teasing, but he also knows it's true beyond that, and it does something funny to his chest. she will keep him safe. he's never had a person he trusted with that so wholly. it was different with k2, as much as he trusted his droid. he is literally at her mercy in the water. ]
[ he goes back to admiring her in her swimsuit instead of dwelling on emotions, because he hadn't missed her own gaze, so fair's fair. it's only a shame he can't touch her without lighting up, because he finds he really wants to - and not even in a kiss her senseless way. he just wants to do things like hold her stupid hand, or maybe dunk her under water. ]
Since I am already soaked. [ and obviously that's the only reason. the water is nice, clear as he follows in after her and wades in towards her. ] I am trusting you here.
[ it's vacation, jyn has already shown herself reckless enough to take the chance on her power -- it is so bright, surely the glow will be brushed off as a trick of the light or a reflection off the clear blue sea that her fingers are gliding through again. it's so clear she can see the shells worn smooth by the sand, the puff of seaweed rolling along the seabed by the in and out of the waves, the sun catching off-- ]
Cassian!
[ her hand flails in the air, evidence of her suddenly childish excitement. between them a tiny silvery-blue fish, no bigger than jyn's hand, swims happily in the sunshine. when it passes through the shadow jyn casts, it swims back into the sun but seeming makes no other notice of the excited woman watching it like a hawk.
[ he was nervous at first for reasons unknown, or maybe it was just the mere concept of a real vacation felt so foreign. but watching jyn in the water, he has no regrets. her glee is the best thing. maybe that's part of what a vacation is. this is... fun. he is having fun, even if it's just being with her in the ocean. ]
[ the water is so clear, he notices the fish at the same time jyn does, but his attention follows her excitement anyway, smiling as she watches it swim around. of course there are fish in the water, and it is pretty neat that it zooms by so close to them, but he's not sure he would find it nearly as fascinating if jyn's delight wasn't so contagious. ]
I can see why the governor's wife wants to move here.
[ jyn also wants to move here. jyn would absolutely spend every second in this particular city, maybe if they save enough credits they can buy a tiny house and move. surely they need fake geologists to help with the conservation of the mountains and volcanoes of new honolulu.
maybe later when they go hiking she will float this idea to cassian. once he figures out his spine, of course. ]
Too bad we can't catch it for dinner. [ the fish, not the governor. she could just snag the fish right out of the water. ]
It's a lot quieter, more peaceful than New Amsterdam. And given her work, right in her element too.
[ and jyn's. he can already see how obsessed she is with it here, and he suspects they'll be coming back more often than not. he finds he doesn't mind the idea. ]
[ he shoots her an amused look. ]
They may have protections in place for the fish here too, like most else. I am sure we can get fish for dinner, even if we do not make it ourselves. [ he realizes she probably wasn't looking for the logical reply, but there he goes, giving it anyway. ]
I know, [ she mutters with a little pout, fingers itching to reach out and snatch it up. instead she slips her hand in the water again and arcs a tiny barrier of water in front of the fish, watching it bump it's lil' snout against the water and swim back before it tries again to go forward.
jyn releases the barrier so it swims by easily but the little bump has brought the smile back to her face. ]
We are surrounded by water. I need more reassurance than that about cheating.
[ the pair of them are stupidly competitive, especially over stupid things. why wouldn't she use the water to her advantage against him?? especially when she already can't get enough of using her power in the sea. ]
[ jyn glances around, looking for a landmark they can race to. a fair ways out it looks like there is a shoal, a sandbar and a cluster of rocks. it's far enough that their lungs will be burning by the time they get there.
[ he peers out, making a judgement on the distance, and nods. they can hang out on the sandbar after to catch their breath, and if worse really comes to worst, jyn's power is literally all around them. she can use it for that but not cheating. ]
[ he risks it, chest alight as he pulls a rock from the sand, making it hover roughly at his own height. he'll toss it up higher when they're ready. ]
[ jyn nods in agreement, shifting her stance so she has a decent push off the soft sand.
the rock drops and they're off. jyn doesn't focus on cassian, but she keeps a sliver of her power activated to keep an eye on him that way. her arms haul her through the water, legs kicking. swimming is like riding a speeder. she might have fallen out of the habit but her body remembers it and the pull of her muscles feels like a reminder that they're alive. salt water stinging at her eyes, warm water sliding over her skin, jyn moves like a fish in water, sure and unfaltering.
her hand slaps at a piece of rock hard enough to make her gasp, sucking in some of the salty water and coughing it up as she hauls herself up on to the shoal. cassian is close behind and she shoves her hand back in the water to cover the rocks and coral with a thin barrier so cassian doesn't scrape his hand open too.
she waits until his head breaks the water to crow: ] I won!
[ out of breath and happily tired, she is still smug. ]
[ cassian forgets he likes to swim. he's had so few opportunities in recent years, but he did learn how, and naturally he's very good at it too. he maybe should have stretched out his muscles before immediately launching into a race, but it's no less fun. strenuous in a good way to push himself through the water in the hopes of beating jyn. ]
[ he does not. but he does slap the rock mere seconds after she does, so it was very close. he bobs briefly in the water, looking up at her and charmed by the way she wears her victory. eventually he hauls himself up to sit beside her, soaking and smiling even as she sits there smugly. ]
Yeah, [ she admits, before her smile spreads wide enough to make her nose scrunch up and her eyes crinkle in the corners. ] But I still won.
[ she reclines back on the rock, still breathing hard from the exertion, kicking her feel idly in the water as the sun slowly dries the water from her pale skin. ]
How long do you think I'd have to work before we could live here?
[ jyn is attached to their house, sure, but not enough to completely abandon it for this island oasis. ]
[ he leans back on his hands, his own feet idle in the water. the sun is warm, the water is clear, and jyn's cheeks area already turning pink. ]
Does Pulsar have a branch here? [ he honestly never looked. he just associates new honolulu with vacation and relaxation - two very new concepts in his life, but ones he is trying very hard to get used to. ]
Though working in the same place we come to have a break does not seem like the best idea. [ he is learning!! ]
We work in the same place we live right now. Why not work somewhere that is by the sea?
[ her kicking feet makes a splashing sound against the sandbar as she searches through the pulsar directory to see if there is a subsidiary in new honolulu. there is not but jyn isn't going to let that stop her. ]
I am not sure I want to work in a place like this. [ he kicks his feet too, not quite realizing he's started mimicking her. ]
New Honolulu is... [ hm. how does he phrase this. he's never had to use these words in this order before, because downtime is a new aspect of cassian's life. ] Like an escape.
[ it's just him and jyn away from their regular lives. they've visited several cities together before, and he likes that it's just... fun. they do it for fun. ]
I suppose, [ jyn agrees, begrudging and almost sullen, mouth pulling down in a pout. she understands, of course, but that doesn't mean she has to like it!
she shifts, rolling on to her side to face him, letting her fingers ghost across the wet shirt clinging to cassian's stomach, setting her hand against his side where her fingers fit perfectly between his ribs. as if jyn were made to fill the negative space of cassian's chest. ]
I was really looking forward to tasting salt on your skin everyday.
[ maybe she can flirt him into agreeing with her. ]
[ she fits so perfectly, it always seems to startle him that one person can seal up all the cracks in his being. she might be hitting on him with an express purpose, but her (public) touch and her (public) flirting only makes him smile. they're outside, it counts as public even if there's no one around. he just likes to feel wanted, and her hand is warm. he covers it up with his own. ]
Wouldn't that get boring after a while? [ she likes variety. ]
[ she ducks her head to kiss the crook of his elbow, licking up his bicep with a pleased hum. salty, delicious. force, she loves his arms, nosing against his sun warmed skin. she could stay like this forever, wouldn't get bored once. ]
Would you say that even if you were not trying to convince me to move to the ocean? [ he softens a little, not strictly from the casual affection, but her words too. it's still hard sometimes to think of himself as someone she wants to be around all the time. he feels very warm, and not just from the sun either. ]
We could live in a cave, with nothing, and I'd be happy. [ a beat. ] Well, food. I'd need food.
[ food and, because it's jyn, blankets. but even the blankets are negotiable. food is non-negotiable for survival purposes. the water she can provide herself. ]
I rather like having a house. [ he's slept in plenty of caves, but it isn't necessary here. they have a cozy bed, a well lived in room, and a stockpile of unperishables. ] Just because we can sleep anywhere doesn't mean we have to anymore.
[ he gives her a kiss on the cheek. ] I am happy with you too. Just not convinced about living here.
