I took her to a night out at my new place of employment and the owner made some disparaging comments towards her. I didn't say anything because I could not.
[ because that would put a spotlight on him and it's much, much too early to rock the proverbial boat. ]
I tried to tell her this but I do not think she cares.
[ why is this... weirdly easy for him to figure out? ]
Daisy is smart, she probably knows about the more undercover elements of your work and how important it is to keep that cover - which you have already tried to explain, so I do not think she is ignoring it entirely.
Since she is still feeling hurt, whatever comments were said have likely struck a nerve outside of the mission, even if they are from your perspective not true.
[ he's worked occasionally with people who could handle a lot, but cassian could notice when a single comment threw them off. it happened more often on someone's first mission. ]
If she is angry you did not defend her but also seems to understand the trapping of the mission, I still think that means there is something else on her mind. Perhaps something she has not discussed with you yet.
[ he doesn't like the possibility of a secret but he can't deny that it might be true. he frowns, letting his mind think back over the last few evenings and if he'd seen anything that hinted at something she hadn't yet shared with him. ]
When you see her next, bring chips as a peace offering. It is innocuous and a good gesture.
[ it's true! it's also something he does for jyn when she's in a grumpy mood. he brings her snacks to eat and munch on to try to foster her opening up. ]
Something I have found that opens the floor to conversation is simply silence. Waiting and letting the quiet drag out after the topic at hand has been established.
Make sure she knows you want to listen, without making any demands for explanation.
[ are they spy techniques or kindergarten squabble solutions?? both, probably. ]
Her feelings are hurt by whatever happened. It does not have to make sense to be true. She is angry you did not defend her, but there must be something - again, unrelated to this mission - that hit unexpectedly.
There must be a reason she wanted you to do it anyway, even though it was not possible at the time.
[ he knows what his default reaction would be: anger. anger that she calls him out on keeping things from her, keeping secrets that need to be shared when there is a possibility that she's doing it herself. ]
[ so is EVERYONE in this goddamn house. illya can be stubborn enough to pry it out of daisy sooner or later. ]
Then tell her it is okay if she does not want to talk about it now, but that you would like to eventually because you do not like seeing her this upset about something.
[ which... isn't manipulative, despite potentially sounding like it. he assumes illya very much hates seeing her upset, or he wouldn't have texted him. ]
[ it is good advice even if illya was hoping for something that would magically fix everything. he doesn't like to feel like he's in some sort of limbo, waiting for her to be ready and not knowing what he's done or might do to further upset her. ]
I will try this.
[ nothing to lose, after all. ]
I would hope she knows that I don't like seeing her upset but I will reiterate. She should be sleeping now, though. I think that is what she wanted to do.
[ there are no magic fixes!! as much as everyone would love them. you gotta work to solve this problem, illya! ]
Of course she knows it, but sometimes we need the reminder. An affirmation. Leave your questions open ended enough so she will not feel trapped into an answer.
If she is sleeping, this conversation can be had in the morning. Bring her breakfast in bed for the food segue. You can even leave the chips at her bedside if she wakes in the night.
[ like jyn doesn't already know about this entire conversation, putting an interruption on the jupiter talk. you're not the only one who shares everything with their cohabitant partner, illya!! ]
[ one day cassian will see the reality of that parallel. ]
You are welcome. If it does not work, we can brainstorm again.

Since she will not explain, I assume you have already asked her to no real answer.
What happened prior? There must be something triggering this.

[ and honestly, how dare she? that was his shtick! he was the one who shut down and ignored problems because he couldn't handle them. ]

What is her favorite snack?

Food.
[ he wasn't being difficult. she loved food. ]
Perhaps potato chips.

[ he is less confused now. still not completely sure he comprehends but there is a game plan, at least. ]
I appreciate you taking some time out of listening to Jyn talk about planets to help me.
