I am as safe as I can be, I think. In the gardens, as recommended. And I have knives.

No one with a sword, but there are people with something that I can only assume is a weapon from how they carry it.

Does it fire projectiles? It might be a blaster or a gun. They are quite common here on board.

Apparently, yes. I hadn't heard of either until now. They seem rather
effective.

They are only as effective as the person using it.

That is the case with most weapons, I suppose.

Do you know how to use the knives?

Yes. A friend taught me how. I can protect myself.

And the guns? Have you figured those out?

No.

They are not that difficult, if you would like a rundown of the basics when there is a moment to spare.

A full lesson may have to wait till these pirates are gone and dealt with, but I may be able to give you the basics the next time I am in the gardens.

I am. The more people who can defend themselves and others, the better.

It takes all kinds of skills for a community to function.

I do know that, but the function I hold at home does not exist here.

I am sure I will find a way to be of use soon. Only perhaps not in battle.

Considering this is the first real battle I have seen since arriving, combat is not usually the most sought after skill.

I am glad to hear it. And not only for the sake of my future usefulness.

There is still plenty to do here.

I will need to learn a lot about space and this ship first. There is nothing remotely like it where I am from.

But I will manage.
